The COVID-19 Pandemic: Infant Outcomes and Feeding in this Emergency

Speaker: Kathleen Marinelli, MD, IBCLC

Coronaviruses are known to infect humans. We will briefly discuss the previous MERS and SARS epidemics, but spend our time on SARS-CoV-2, the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic. We will assess the current and on-going evidence for vertical transmission of the virus from mother to infant, and the presence of the virus and anti-SARS-COV-2 antibodies in human milk. We will also talk about available information concerning the incidence and severity of infant COVID-19 infections. I will also plan to discuss with you guidelines that have been issued for postpartum care and infant feeding by a number of authorities, in what I and many others feel is an infant and young child feeding emergency, some based on evidence, knowledge of standard infant feeding recommendations, and some on fear of unknown.
