Child Care:

  • Creating a social media message on how child care programs can support breastfeeding families during COVID-19.
  • Work continues on integrating breastfeeding information into community college Early Childhood Care & Education curriculum.
  •  Working on Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care Provider Toolkit, using the Alaska Toolkit as a template.

Hospital: 

The Hospital section last met on May 26th. Sheila Sloss RN, IBCLC, Lactation Program Coordinator presented a spotlight of AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. They discussed the latest recommendation for COVID-19 and breastfeeding including the Refusal to separate form . They also discussed handling breast milk when mother and infant are separated – protocol for setting up clean area for transporting milk, laminated procedure on outside of patient door, CGBI or HMBANA illustrations.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, July 28, 12-1 p.m.

Local Breastfeeding Coalitions:

The Local BF Coalitions section last met on Thursday May 14th, with 13 of us on the call. Gwen Whittit, Program Coordinator for the High 5 for Mom & Baby told us about “High 5 for Mom & Baby Premier” which will be launching in June. We also discussed how COVID-19 is affecting each of our local BF Coalitions. We reviewed our Section Goals and will touch on them again at next meeting. Finally we talked about reviewing and updating “Breastfeeding Welcome Here” businesses and lists on the KBC website. Meetings from 12-1 PM on the 2nd Thurs. of odd # months (July 9th) 

Public Health:

The KBC Public Health Section has spent the first half of 2020 working to identify a next project. The Section is considering how to best use the information in the KBC’s Breastfeeding Support by Kansas County spreadsheet to help counties take meaningful action to improve breastfeeding support. We welcome your ideas and suggestions! The section has also been as learning about the how the Becoming a Mom Program and Early Head Start Programs support breastfeeding across Kansas. Please join us for our next meeting Thursday, June 12th to learn more about Parents as Teachers from Nis Wilbur. The Public Health Section meets on the second Thursday of even numbered months from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. For more information, contact Danielle at Danielle.ast@wichita.edu.
