Beyond the Basics is intended for those with experience providing breastfeeding support to families. It is assumed that attendees feel competent to counsel healthy parents on positioning, latch, and establishing/maintaining a milk supply in uncomplicated situations. It is NOT recommended for WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors or those new to the field of breastfeeding support.

Agenda & Content

Day 1:

1:00-1:15 – Introductions
1:15-2:45 – Sore Nipples- infectious & non-infectious causes, trauma, infant biting (case discussion in the last ½ hour)
2:45-3:00 – Break
3:00-3:30 – Feeding assessment – using pre and post-feeding weights as one piece of the picture – How, Why, and When
3:30-4:15 – Fitting breast shields, breast massage, hand expression, evidence for antenatal expression
4:15-5:00 – Breastfeeding the NICU graduate: preterm, late preterm, nipple shields

Day 2:
1:00-1:45 – Case-based learning- The infant who prefers one side, the infant who does not latch, nursing strikes
1:45-2:30 – Maternal medications, herbs, alcohol, marijuana/drug exposure
2:30-2:45 – Break
2:45-3:30 – Tongue Tie
3:30-4:15 – Induced lactation (case discussion in last 20 minutes)
4:15-4:30 – Evaluation, questions
